Around the World and to the top of it!

14th July 2009 15:55

This September Dave Bunting MBE, Everest Expedition Leader along with Dee Caffari MBE, record breaking around the world yachtswoman, will be presenting their amazing stories of human endeavor and adventure at the brand new Rosebowl building in Leeds.

The events are being held to raise funds for an expedition to the Himalayas which will be led by Dave with a selected team of 22 staff and students from Leeds Metropolitan University.

The team will arrive in Kathmandu in October where they will link up with a community based not-for-profit project called the Self-Help Group for Cerebral Palsy (SGCP). SGCP provides care, comfort and relief to children with cerebral palsy and supports their parents. The team will be working at SGCP, helping them to finish the construction of a new rehab centre. We also aim to provide them with financial support – just £1,600 enables them to employ a community outreach worker for a whole year so your support really can make a difference.

The team will then set out to Lukla airport, in the heart of the Himalayas, where they will start their trek to Everest Base Camp.

Dave’s presentation is on Fri 11th Sept and Dee will be speaking on the Thu 24th Sept.

Dave Bunting led a team of elite climbers on a groundbreaking expedition to become the first Brits to climb the formidable West Ridge of Mount Everest. As Expedition Leader Dave headed up the planning, team selection and preparation as well as being a strong member of the climbing team himself. This highly publicised expedition earned Dave an MBE for his outstanding leadership and was filmed for a televised documentary Everest: Man v. Mountain.

His inspirational presentation of his experiences planning, leading the expedition and climbing on Everest’s West Ridge is a riveting and awe-inspiring account of the determination and doggedness necessary to pull together and then carry out such a huge and complicated expedition. He paints an extraordinary picture of teamwork, leadership, friendship and adventure that will leave you inspired, moved and entertained. With stunning images from the rarely seen vantage point of the West Ridge of Mount Everest, it is a presentation that will leave a lasting impression

Dee Caffari is one of Britain’s most inspirational women. Her warm delivery and the images and footage she shows bring the drama and challenges of her world-record-setting voyages alive.

Sailing solo for nearly six months to become the first woman to sail ‘the wrong way’ round the world,  and then completing the Vendee Globe race in 6th place has earned Dee a well deserved place in  the World Record books. She has faced icebergs, intense sleep deprivation, technical failures and the worst that the Southern Ocean can muster. Dee speaks from experience of staying motivated when things get tough, achieving high performance, self-belief and succeeding against the odds.

With anecdotes drawn from three circumnavigations of the globe, Dee’s sense of humour, positive world-view and ‘jaw-dropping’ stories and achievements entertain and inspire her audiences.

So please come along for a great evening’s entertainment and help us raise enough money to give some much needed physical and financial support to the Self help Group for Cerebral Palsy in Nepal.
